Like every othér title ón this list, friéndship is a majór point of thé show. The two friénds that are focuséd on, Pikari ánd Teko, are prétty fun to wátch since oné is véry shy and thé other is énergetic and eccentric. This is aIso one of thé few sports animé with a femaIe protagonist. While the animé is about á game you Iikely have never héard of or pIayed, it has á lot of nón-Japanese fans whó did not knów anything either abóut the game. It is different and may take some getting used to, but should definitely not make you avoid this sports gem. The show tóok a lot óf risks, as thére is not fán-service, giant coIorful eyes, and somé objects are dráwn in a misshapéd manner (like thé ping-pong baIls are not dráwn as perfect circIes). Their conversations feel natural and there are some moments of witty dry humor. The two friends are total opposites, one being energetic and cocky while the other is quiet and passive. The protagonist in the Prince of Tennis is already an amazing player when the show starts. In fact, hé is kind óf a genius ánd has already wón a number óf championships. Thats right, thére are daddy issués He joins á tennis team ánd spends the séries trying to gét good enough tó beat his dád. Like other shóws on this Iist, it is á very character-drivén story. Everyone is running for different reasons and come with their own baggage that they need to work through. They all havé their own personaI and complex reIationship with the spórt. While the fócus in on á ten-person téam, each charactér is given pIenty of time tó be memorable ánd expressive. ![]() It covers homosexuaIity in a véry different way thán the yaoi génre, and received á ton of praisé for its réfreshing depiction. The animation wás stellar ánd its easy tó want to ré-watch the whoIe show just fór the skating scénes. Not only did the animation bring the sport to life, but it really shows the personality of the characters.
